This is Refreshing

In the wake of Rush Limbaugh's, um, poorly phrased remarks last week about Sandra Fluke's character and his subsequent apology for them, an apology he repeated today on his radio show, liberal columnist and commentator Kirsten Powers thinks the Left is long over-due for a few apologies and more of their own.

  1. There was a time when this situation would have made me angry. The article you mention is absolutely correct in that the left has plenty to apologize for as does Limbaugh. It seems to me that there was a time when honest folks could argue a position without having to resort to these kinds of tactics, the tactics of bullies or simply being able to scream the loudest. Somewhere along the line though that has been lost, maybe it actually never existed. Maybe as I grow older I long for something that seemed to exist in the past but never actually did….civility, courtesy, or just old fashioned manners. I found it quite interesting that your post regarding the late Mr. Wilson was sandwiched between two posts regarding Limbaugh and felt it was perfectly placed if for no other reason than to remind us that from time to time there are serious minds that have the ability to just simply be polite.

Your title implies that Ms. Powers’ article is “refreshing” and I can certainly see why anyone from the right, the side I certainly align myself with, would find it so and as I said earlier, there was a time when the whole thing would have made me angry. Now however, I just find it terribly sad.

  2. Thanks M.

As you yourself say, the civility that you, that we all pine for never existed, and in this contest, it never will.

Sadly, we are not arguing with the Left about whether the top marginal tax rate should be 35% or 45%. Instead we are engaged in a death struggle for the very soul of our country. It's not a debate, it's a war and in war there is no substitute for victory. The Left knows this and it explains why they fight, "no holds barred", as they do.

Our task is doubly difficult. We must fight to win and at the same time retain our honor in the struggle.

I, for one, am convnced we can achieve both.
