A former student of mine wrote her MA thesis on Russian orphanages (she worked for an international adoption agency in Moscow)--it is a brilliant work, showing how Marxist theory corrupted Russian families, leading to the inflated populations of the orphanages and the indifferent and often cruel treatment of children there. As the headlines relate, recent years have seen a revision of the earlier practices, but they are still recovering.
